2019 is very important year for the people who dreamed to have a foldable smartphone. But it’s not dream anymore! Now, it’s reality and anyone can buy it from nearby stores.
We already used foldable phone called “flip phone” in the back ’90s and 2000s. But in the era of smartphone, thinking a foldable phone is not an easy issue, and someone tried to fold the phone than it eventually didn’t make any sense unless a broken smartphone. That is unless possible introducing tons of revolutionary improvement over the screen of the mobile phone.
Tradition display i.e. LED or IPS has less opportunity to fold and of course the glass that is used if not flexible and that’s the root problem behind the foldable screen.
Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode displays (aka Flexible OLED displays) work by pulsing the electricity through a mesh of organic compounds. These compounds are very much thin, vivid and of course flexible. They do not need backlight, and produce border colours rather than thick LED displays. Manufacturers like Samsung have been taking some innovative steps towards OLED displays since around 2011. But glass is not very flexible yet and the battery that depends on Lithium Polymer are impossible to bend to a great level.
Then the manufacturers have had to develop bendy polymer for screens. Aluminium and plastics phone are typically bendable but they will snap after a couple of folds. So, they needed to find out a revolutionary improvement to overcome these problems.
Somehow all the problems solved and a stunning foldable mobile phone is launched by Samsung called Samsung Galaxy Fold where screen can be bend and the battery is spitted into two segments. And two days later another amazing foldable phone launched by Huawei called Huawei Mate X. And then all the rumours and prediction came in reality.
Samsung Galaxy Fold has a 7.3-inch screen that folds over itself and company offers on the conference that it can fold thousand times. Price is little bit too high around $1980 but at the same time one can get plenty of tech inside like a high-end processor, 512 GB of storage and 12 GB of RAM. In the camera segments is has triple-lens 16MP+12MP+12MP rear camera. Can run three app simultaneously. And for the has everything like Samsung but the screen wraps around the outside rather than being hidden inside. Both the phone has 5G capability but not running this yet. So, the tech lover can touch there dream but it will be long waiting to become affordable to everyone.
Now the question is durability of the phone. Lots of new elements introduced in a single place. Samsung invented a new polymer that creates 50 percent thinner than the typical smartphone. But there is acute chance of being scratches as there is lack of opportunity to use glass protection. Therefore, the folding point has some critical limitation. And huge screen requires more power than the regular one. So, in fact, this foldable phone is slightly less durable than the traditional one.
Don’t worry, these problems could be solved sooner and the price will be affordable to everyone.
