Getting Rid of Cancer in Early Stages

Cancer differs from other diseases and is more powerful. Although the effects of brain stroke and heart attack may be more severe. It may have been present in the body for a long time and only detected later stage, making it difficult to treat it. There are no exact causes of this disease, but there are several risk factors and there is no certainty that it will not hit you, even if you refrain from those. That’s why it’s considered one of the deadliest diseases. Cancer is a group of diseases in human body cells that are not needed in the body with abnormally growing.

It is detected by finding out where it is located and what is the extent of it. All of this is found out in diagnostic tests. Some of the common diagnostic tests are as follows :

Imaging Tests

These tests take pictures of the body inside. You are done to find out how far the treatment works. Different forms of energy are sent to your body, such as x-rays, sound waves, radioactive particles, etc. The energy patterns are transformed into an image. They are used in the early phases and tests. Images from these tests are used to monitor changes over the course of the treatment.

Ultrasound

This procedure is used to check the tumors in the body which are not detected in X-ray. There is no need for special preparation and is a quick procedure. The images created are known as sonograms. Ultrasound is exceptional to create pictures of some soft tissue diseases. It is finished in 15 – 20 minutes on average.

Endoscopy

It is a minimally invasive diagnostic test which is done with the help of an endoscope. Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine a person’s digestive tract. They have a small video camera on top which puts pictures on the computer screen. They are used to find cancer in people with no symptoms or to find cancer early.

Bone Scan

A bone scan is a nuclear medicine test. This means that the procedure uses a very small amount of a radioactive substance, called a tracer. The tracer is injected into a vein. It shows possible cancer in areas where too much or too little tracer has been absorbed by the body. Areas which absorb very less tracer are susceptible to this disease.

Mammography

Mammography is the process of using low-energy X-rays to examine the human breast for diagnosis and screening. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses or microcalcifications. The whole procedure takes around 10 to 15 minutes. It can be done either with the help of digital mammography or 3-D breast imaging.

Other treatment options explained below:

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the use of any drug to treat any disease. But to most people, the word chemotherapy means drugs used for cancer treatment. It’s often shortened to “chemo.” Surgery and radiation therapy remove, kill, or damage cancer cells in a certain area, but chemo can work throughout the whole body. There are many ways to use this treatment –

  • It is used as the only treatment in some diseases like leukemia and lymphoma.
  • It is used before the surgery called neoadjuvant chemotherapy and after the surgery is known as adjuvant chemotherapy.
  • In case of metastatic cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and recurrent if cancer comes back after the treatment.

Chemotherapy is given for a specific period of time. It is given in cycles and usually, it lasts for 6 months or a year. There are different ways to impart this treatment method. Some of them are Intravenous, oral, injected, topical, etc.

Surgery

It is an operation to remove the tumor from the body. It is one of the most used and oldest forms of treatment. It can also be used for different purposes like diagnosing cancer, the location of cancer and the extent to which it has spread. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other techniques like chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

In some cases, a surgeon is not able to remove the whole tumor as it may cause damage to the body. In these cases, debulking is done. As much of the tumor is removed from the body and the remaining tumor is removed with the help of other methods.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy or radiotherapy, often abbreviated RT, RTx, or XRT, is a therapy using ionizing radiation, generally as part of cancer treatment to control or kill malignant cells and normally delivered by a linear accelerator. More than half the people suffering from cancer receive radiation therapy at least once. This treatment can be done in two ways. One is by external beam radiation in which radiation is delivered from outside the machine. It can treat large areas of the body too. Another method is internal radiation therapy.

Cancer treatment in Bangladesh:

According to the 2018 report by International Agency for Research on Cancer, every year an estimated 1.5 lakh people contract cancer in Bangladesh. There are only four specialized cancer hospitals in the country. Outside Dhaka, there is only one functional radiotherapy facility at Chittagong Medical College Hospital in operation for around six months now.
